PERUZA is taking part in Halieutis fair 2023 in Morocco https://peruza.com/blog/news/peruza-is-taking-part-in-halieutis-fair-2023-in-morocco/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 09:49:35 +0000 https://peruza.com/?p=7750 In this blog post you will learn about Halieutis event.

The post PERUZA is taking part in Halieutis fair 2023 in Morocco appeared first on PERUZA.

]]>

As the world is changing so fast and technologies are the main turning point of our business, it’s great to stop and meet other industry representatives from around the world. So, we were glad to take part in the Halieutis fair 2023 in Morocco. Our specialists Intars Puriņš and Guntis Dlohi met up with our agent in Morocco – Jaouad El Madi.

“Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture: levers for an inclusive and efficient Blue Economy“ – read the description of the event. And we can agree, that sustainability and finding ways to make the process more effective is the efficient way of approaching what’s coming next.

What is the Halieutis exhibition?

Under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, The 6th edition of the Halieutis Fair took place in Agadir, the first fishing port of Morocco. From the 1st to the 5th of February Halieutis gathered specialists from the halieutic field from all around the world. The Halieutis Show is an international showcase for six segments: fleet & machinery, recovery & process, institutional, international, animation, and innovation.

A section dedicated only to sustainable development was included in the sixth edition to enhance it. This program has a clear and sector-specific offer and is strongly geared toward an international audience. It is also a gathering place for forward-thinking global executives who pay attention to consumer trends and serves as an observatory of trends and developments. Additionally, this event serves as a venue for creating business opportunities.

A semi-movement of investment in the fisheries sector has begun, with trade fairs serving as a key lever. This movement is driven by the current context, which is characterized by the reform and modernization of the fishing sector around the world as a result of aging fishing fleets, shrinking fish resources, changing consumption patterns, and the insistent and urgent need to steer the world’s economies towards sustainable development. As a result, new difficulties must be addressed on a worldwide level.

In the 16 000 m2 exhibition space, more than 350 exhibitors gathered to network and pay attention to rising global trends, as we enter new consumer patterns and global environmental issues.

Why Morocco?

Featuring a double coastline, Atlantic and Mediterranean, Morocco has 3500 km of rich and varied coastline. Morocco is the top fish producer in Africa and the top producer and exporter of sardines, and its oceans, which have an exclusive economic zone spanning over one million square kilometers, are among the richest in fish resources. In the Moroccan economy, the fishing industry already has a significant economic and social impact. During the previous ten years, on average, it contributed about 2.3% to the GDP. The fishing industry supports almost 500,000 indirect jobs in addition to more than 170,000 direct jobs. Morocco has established a national strategy for the sector’s development named “Halieutis.”

PERUZA’s takeaway from the event

As we expected, we bring several important finding about Morocco market. Morocco has large producers that catch and process large volumes, and the fish caught are at relatively low prices. As predicted, in a country where the price of labor is relatively low, we see some issues that should and could be fixed. For producers and processors, the price of the equipment is primary, and sustainability, for now, is just an extra. But we already saw some opportunities, like equipment with higher manual labour involvement, but keeping in mind the sustainability and optimization of the process.

We see potential working with companies that control the entire cycle – from fishing to deliveries to store chains, etc. A very important factor for automating production lines is product and production hygiene. It is much easier to comply with machines than with operators. This is an important factor in obtaining quality certificates in order to be able to supply large international store chains.

Final thoughts

As usual, such events are not only opportunities to meet other industry specialists, but also to look at common things from a different perspective and gain both experience and new ideas.

As robotics, automation, and machinery develop, you must look into the best possible solutions now. If you’re interested in learning more about how PERUZA can help you get the best results with your food processing, feel free to get in touch at info@peruza.com, and we’ll be happy to discuss the possibilities of us creating something great for your fish processing business!

Global Energy Crisis Impact on Food Processing Industry https://peruza.com/blog/news/global-energy-crisis-impact-on-food-processing-industry/ Thu, 27 Oct 2022 08:01:24 +0000 https://peruza.com/?p=7504 In this blog post, you will learn about how the global energy crisis will impact the food processing industry.

The post Global Energy Crisis Impact on Food Processing Industry appeared first on PERUZA.

]]>

In terms of energy supply, the world is coming to a crossroads. Countries have continued to utilize coal, oil, and gas extensively to power their economy in spite of decades-long recommendations to lessen dependence on fossil fuels. In addition to increasing carbon emissions that contribute to global warming, the burning of fossil fuels has also resulted in a globalized world with highly concentrated food and energy networks, making them particularly vulnerable to disruption. The war in Ukraine highlights how our world’s energy and food systems are not diverse enough to support resilient livelihoods. People all throughout the world are unable to handle the escalating costs as energy, fertilizer, and food prices rise. As a result, the rise in energy prices is having an unprecedented impact on the humanitarian crisis and food shortages.

The political situation has increased the pressure on the world's food supply chains

Food prices have increased steeply over the last two years and appear set to go higher following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, putting millions of people at risk. While there are many causes of the current difficulties in the food supply chains, it is important to remember that the global energy crisis is also a crucial factor.

The World Food Programme estimates that the number of people experiencing severe food insecurity more than tripled between 2017 and 2021 and may rise another 17% this year to 323 million as a result of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. The recovery in demand following the Covid-19 crisis, severe weather impacts on supply, an increase in trade restrictions on agricultural goods, and quickly rising input costs, particularly for energy and fertilizers, have all contributed to the spike in food prices since mid-2020.

Food supply chains, markets, and related inputs (agrochemicals, fertilizer, fuel, feed, capital, and labor) are all interconnected globally, which means that seemingly minor supply disruptions in one area or industry can have disastrous effects on another.

The developing food supply crisis shows how energy and food supply security are linked

Energy is used for a variety of things in the food and agriculture industries. A few examples of direct energy use are the power used for automated irrigation systems, the gasoline used for farm equipment, and the energy needed for various steps in food processing, packing, shipping, and distribution. Since the production of pesticides and mineral fertilizers requires a significant amount of energy, their use results in significant indirect energy consumption. Direct and indirect energy expenditures can make up 40% to 50% of the total variable costs of cropping in advanced countries like the United States, while the percentage varies greatly between regions and depends on things like weather and crop kinds. Therefore, increasing energy and fertilizer prices unavoidably result in greater production costs, which in turn result in higher food prices.

Will energy bills force food processing factories to go dark?

By the end of 2022, the previous state of affairs for food processing and logistics, as well as for ingredients, suppliers, labor, and other factors, may be long gone. The food industry is facing new normal, that’s for sure. And the energy crisis that is just around the corner, manufacturers are facing more and more pressure.

First and foremost, since the production of food and beverages is an energy-intensive operation, this sector is particularly vulnerable to problems caused by energy shortages. Energy is required at every stage of the supply chain, typically in several forms (such as fuel and electricity), therefore direct and indirect energy expenditures can make up as much as 40% to 50% of a company’s total variable costs.

However, there are other factors at play in our current situation that makes the food and beverage industries financially stressed. The dilemma is exacerbated by a trickle-down effect from increasing oil and natural gas costs that affects other materials these businesses use. Here are the main components, that build the rising expenses:

Fertilizers

Regarding farms, those that grow agricultural products are very dependent on fertilizer, the price of which has increased due to the need for ammonia, which is virtually entirely derived from natural gas. Since mid-2020, the cost of fertilizer has more than tripled, hitting its highest point since the recession of 2008 and 2009.

Plastics

Plastics are another resource that food and beverage business owners regularly require — usually for packaging — and they have become more expensive as a result of the demand for petrochemicals in their manufacturing. The rising expense of plastic has made the possibility of switching to more environmentally friendly packaging alternatives like cardboard, paper, and bamboo, whether they are used as bags, wrappers, clamshells, or in other capacities, even more appealing.

Carbon dioxide

The vital byproduct of carbon dioxide (CO2) is also in shorter supply as a result of fertilizer being more expensive and scarce, making it yet another necessary resource that is now more expensive for the food and beverage industries. CO2 is essential for many product categories since it is used in a range of applications, from preserving packaged goods’ freshness when they are sealed in containers to giving carbonated beverages their fizz. In order to achieve the world’s energy and climate goals, a combination of technologies known as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) may be used. CCUS entails CO2 capture from significant point sources, such as industrial facilities or power plants that burn either fossil fuels or biomass as fuel. Now it’s time to think about this kind of solution more than ever.

How Automatic Case Packaging Improves Food Processing https://peruza.com/blog/news/how-automatic-case-packaging-improves-food-processing/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 20:05:37 +0000 https://peruza.com/?p=7440 In this blog post, you will learn about ways in which automatic case packaging improves food processing.

The post How Automatic Case Packaging Improves Food Processing appeared first on PERUZA.

]]>

In all industries where everything was traditionally conducted manually, new machines are now being used due to advance technologies. One of the most well-known sectors that have fully embraced modern technological advancement is food packaging. Apart from fruits and vegetables, every food item you consume comes in some form of packaging. Regardless of the food kind, an automated food packaging machine is used for this packing.

In this blog post, you will learn all there is to know about automated food packaging, how it is done, the benefits of the process, and the best technologies.

Automation in the food packaging process

Automation plays a significant part in raising the competitiveness of your company, regardless of whether your goal is to raise labor productivity, expand your facility’s capacity, or improve food safety. Also automating the production and packaging is the best solution to meet the demands of the supply chain – the food industry needs automated packaging systems that can process big volumes at rapid speeds.

Systems for packaging food are needed at various points along a production chain. To begin with, a naked product needs to be wrapped or enclosed in the main packaging. Before the products are packed into a larger case and stacked pallets for distribution, secondary packaging is used to load the products into cases or cartons. To support the entire supply chain, each of these automated systems needs to run quickly.

And if you still wonder if packing is important, remember, in every area of the food packaging industry, automated food packaging lines are present, without a doubt. Every form of packing line work you can imagine has a robotics solution, from straightforward pick and drop operations to intricate processes like can sealing or pouch manufacturing. In reality, even cheap candies that you purchase have gone through stages of automation in food packing.

How is automation useful in food packaging?

Automation is so important in the food processing and packaging industry because of the various benefits it provides. Let’s look at the most important ones:

 • Safety & Protection – Automated industrial robots improve workplace safety and protection, reducing the risk of worker injury. For instance, using automated technologies rather than manual labor can process and package meat products, preventing injuries from sharp blades.
 • Productivity & Flexibility – The productivity of production lines can be increased by many when robotics are used in the food industry. Thousands of products can be processed by machines in the time it takes a human to process only one. And when it comes to flexibility, machines that automatically package food can have their performance and output changed as needed by the manufacturers.
 • Lower operating costs & Consistency of production – In comparison to a factory that packages food manually, an automated facility incurs cheaper operating costs. This is because machines in an automated factory just need electricity, and other operating expenses are minimal, making them economically viable. Automated food packaging generates consistent products across the board. Machines pack the products, thus there is no human error in the process. Each product will be nearly identical because they all have the same weight, size, and appearance.
 • Increase product quality & Longer shelf life – products that are packed and sealed in proper cases or boxes will last longer, increase the shelf time, or in other words expiration date. The right choice of package material also will provide better quality of the product as well.

Types of automated food packaging technology

There are several technologies available, each of which was created for a specific task. The following are 3 frequently used methods in food processing and packaging, but there are many more that variates from product to product:

 • Raw Food Packaging – Uncooked vegetables, fruits, seeds, cereals, and other products fall under the category of “raw food.” The principal packaging technology that specializes in these products is raw food packing. This is typically done using paper or polyethylene, both of which are inexpensive and do not chemically react with the different foods.
 • Boxing – Products are loaded into boxes using box packing machinery, also known as boxing. These machines also perform the task of making boxes from plain cardboard sheets. These devices are typically used in the tertiary or secondary packaging of food processing.
 • Case Packing – Robotic cases packing machines, also known as case packers, pack food products into cases. The secondary packing of food goods typically uses one of these devices. Secondary packaging suggests that the food products are not directly in contact with the case packing system but are instead separated by a different packing technique.

PERUZA’S Case packer

PERUZA’s Case packer is designed for packaging products in cases in factories with high-speed production lines. And this automation solution is designed by the requested product specification. This system can be used as a side case packer and also a top case packer depending on the product and packaging type. Case packers can be used with various materials – metal, plastic, and glass. Processing capacity can reach up to 600 p/min and cycle time up to 2.5 seconds, depending on the product. The main benefits are:

 • Adaptable to customer needs and layout from 2 x 4 to 4 x 5 products;
 • Wide range of case sizes;
 • Can be equipped with slip sheet dispenser between layers;
 • Can be equipped with case erecting, case sealing, printing, and labeling machines.

Final thoughts

Automation in food packaging is now the standard rather than a trend. Anyone working in the food and beverage sector who isn’t using the most modern food robotics may not even be able to stay up with the competition.

As robotics, automation, and machinery develop, you must look into the best possible solutions now. 5 Food and Beverage Manufacturing Trends to Watch https://peruza.com/blog/news/5-food-and-beverage-manufacturing-trends-to-watch/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 10:09:40 +0000 https://peruza.com/?p=6619 In this post, you will learn about 5 food and beverage manufacturing trends.

The post 5 Food and Beverage Manufacturing Trends to Watch appeared first on PERUZA.

]]>

Times are changing, that’s for sure. Innovations, the transformation of global trends, and consumer shifts of thought are driving significant change in food and beverage manufacturing.

As consumer attitudes continue to evolve, they are more willing than ever to try new products and embrace the use of science in food production. There’s never been more science involved in food processing and packaging, geared to allay consumer concerns about cost, health, and environmental sustainability. So, here are 5 of the processing, packaging, and supply trends that are emerging in the industry.

1. Innovations at all stages of production

To reach consumer demands, the food industry is changing and developing and innovations are the keyword of it all. And one of the most exciting new food and beverage manufacturing trends is the use of high-pressure processing known as HPP. Using this low-temperature pasteurization technique is more and more common among food producers for more natural applications, such as naked juice, ice cream, and cookie dough. The method is will kill any bacteria that may have been picked up during processing and help to keep the product fresh and usable much longer. But there is another side as well, HPP comes with a lot of challenges – the equipment is expensive and, because it isn’t as thorough a kill step for all microbes, products may need to be refrigerated. However, despite its challenges, we will see wider adoption as HPP manufacturers and packaging suppliers innovate the processing.

2. Consumer pressure for sustainable products

Nowadays, most of us pay more attention to sustainability, that’s for sure. As consumer pressure continues to grow for the food industry to eliminate its reliance on single-use plastics and reduce waste, the question of producing food in a sustainable way is still relevant. Here are aspects to consider:

Reducing packaging waste

When it comes to food packaging, companies must reach for food safety and satisfy consumers. And the list goes on – product quality, appearance, functionality, cost, and environmental impact are all that need to be taken care of. Driven by corporate responsibility and consumer demand, producers should prioritize sustainability in their packaging.

Upcycling

Upcycling or in other words repurposing food products that would otherwise be wasted is a trend that many companies are already following. The value-adding process of turning food that would have been wasted into products for human consumption gives a lot of benefits, like:

 • Reducing food waste and greenhouse gas emissions;
 • Increasing the value of food that would otherwise be wasted;
 • Creating a more sustainable and resilient food system.

Indoor vertical farming

Yes, you read it right – vertical farming is the thing to look out for. More fruits and vegetables will be grown in greenhouses, allowing them to be produced closer to where they’re consumed and dramatically changing the way consumers interact with locally grown food. But most of the places lack the land where widen. But the sky is the limit and growing it all on several floors or vertically is the future.

3. Food manufacturing automation

Automation in manufacturing is becoming more and more relevant. The shortage of labor in the food and beverage industry is an ongoing issue and it will definitely speed up the transition to more automated facilities. And more issues arise during the seasonal vacation period. No doubt the supply of raw materials and available land is often most abundant in rural areas where it can be hard to attract employees. Also, COVID-19 made the situation even worse. Not only are restrictions on how many people can work together, but the sick leave rate is going up with every outbreak. Luckily, automation allows for increased efficiency and flexibility of production, improved management of the supply chain, and better record keeping for regulatory purposes. Yes, it can be expensive, but in the long term – will definitely pay off.

4. Evolving workplace quality of life to attract workers

As the new generation enters the working force and the competition for labor is still enlarging, employees are looking for benefits rather than just big salaries. Companies that provide a more attractive quality of work life—are driving the transformation to improve work environments. As many food and beverage manufacturing facilities are based in rural areas they need to kick their mise en scène up a notch. So, offering workers competitive pay in a more relaxed and comfortable setting is a must.

5. Emphasizing health claims on packaging and in marketing

We think about our health more than ever and we are more informed about what goes in our food than ever. Currently, consumers reach for clean labels listing fewer and simpler ingredients, including those that come with health claims. Also, aiming for more functional ingredients—like pro- and pre-biotics, antioxidants, and vitamins—requires an intimate awareness of product qualities and the processing conditions they can withstand. So, putting in other words, at the moment the trend is pushing toward minimally processed foods.

Final thoughts

The world is changing and each and every industry is affected, that’s for sure. To keep up the business, you just have to look out for trends and the latest additions to the game. Of course, not all at once but step-by-step changes should be implemented regardless of whether you are in food, beverage, or any other manufacturing industry.

With the recent opening of the Expo season following the success of PERUZA participating in Seafood Global Expo 2022 in Barcelona and more events planned, we are now glad to let you know more about another important occasion we are taking part in.

With innovation-driven development and impeccable quality being the two most important pillars for PERUZA, we found it fitting to participate in this year’s Icelandic Fisheries or so-called Icefish Exhibition in Iceland.

What is Icefish Exhibition?

Icelandic Fisheries or so-called Icefish Exhibition has been one of the most established and anticipated events for the seafood industry, and it’s been happening every three years since 1984.

The ingenious 3-year cycle (with the exception of the pandemic) ensures that the businesses exhibiting at the expo have new technologies, products, and services to showcase at each event which, in turn, means visitors know they can rely on the exhibition to keep them informed of new developments from across the market.

Now, as the world is celebrating the safe return of trade events around the world & their importance in accelerating economic recovery, the 13th show is set to happen in Kópavogur – just outside Reykjavik, Iceland.

The exhibition is planned to take place from the 8th to the 10th of June at the Smárinn, Fifan Halls Kópavogur, Iceland.

The Icefish exhibition covers every aspect of the commercial fishing industry from catching and locating to processing and packaging, right through to marketing and distribution of the final product.

So we found it fitting to be participating and telling visitors more about our pelagic fish plants as well as introducing our proven and innovative fish drying solutions to a wider audience.

Based on the data from the 12th exhibition in 2017 with an attendance of 13,621 visitors from 52 countries, you can see a breakdown of the Icefish attendees below, and may find it useful to predict if this could be a great event for you to attend as well:

It is projected that around 500 companies, products, and brands will be showcased over the three days by exhibitors from 22 different countries including Denmark, Norway, and the Faroe Islands. In 2017 first-time exhibitors were in attendance from around the world including Spain, Turkey, Germany, Peru, and Singapore, from businesses including shipyards, netting producers, and reduction gear manufacturers, many with a worldwide reputation and track record of supplying the Icelandic fishing industry.

The three-day program will also present quite an extensive matchmaking event where, following the trend from 2017 when more than 90 participants from 24 countries attended, it will be possible to network and form business partnerships and explore new markets in a format of focused 15-minute meetings.

During the expo, the Icelandic Fisheries Awards will be held. The awards will recognize those who have made an outstanding contribution to the commercial fishing industry- the best seafood products, the best staff, the best suppliers, and more, and the winners will be chosen from a list of participants that applied before the 13th of May.

With such an exciting program and so many amazing industry professionals to meet in one place, there really is nothing more to say about this event than – we hope to see you there, too!

While PERUZA has more than 1500 projects realized under our belt, we feel like there is always space for growth and improvements in our expertise. That’s why we like to push ourselves to continuously showcase our capabilities around the world.

With innovation-driven development and impeccable quality being the two most important pillars for PERUZA, we found it fitting to participate in this year’s Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona.

What is Seafood Expo Global?

Seafood Expo Global/ Seafood Processing Global has been the largest event for the seafood industry, and it’s been happening annually since 1992.

For 27 years this well-established event had taken place in Brussels, Belgium. Then the events had to be canceled due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, as the world is celebrating the safe return of trade events around the world & their importance in accelerating economic recovery, the first Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global that will take place in the new location in Barcelona, Spain, is going to feature more than 1,500 exhibiting companies.

It is set to happen from the 26th to the 28th of April at the Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via exhibition grounds.

Vice President Liz Plizga of Diversified Communications Group, the organizer of the event, states that the upcoming event will feature an estimated 39,545 square meters of net exhibit space, representing 97 percent of the size of the 2019 event, which was the largest edition of Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global yet.

The three-day event will also present a quite extensive educational conference covering 20 topics with 65 international experts featured. There will be panels on seafood industry business and leadership, an overview of climate change’s impact on the industry, an update on the aquafeed sector, and much more.

On the first day of the expo, the annual Seafood Excellence Global Awards will be held. The awards recognize the best seafood products of the year with 39 finalists representing 13 countries this year.

With such an exciting program and so many amazing industry professionals to meet in one place, there really is nothing more to say about this event than – we hope to see you there, too!

Where can you find us?

Darbības programmas “Izaugsme un nodarbinātība” 1.2.1. specifiskā atbalsta mērķa “Palielināt privātā sektora investīcijas P&A” 1.2.1.1. pasākumā “Atbalsts jaunu produktu un tehnoloģiju izstrādei kompetences centru ietvaros” SIA “MAŠĪNBŪVES KOMPETENCES CENTRS” No 2019.gada 1.aprīļa līdz 2022.gada 30.jūnijam īsteno projektu Nr.1.2.1.1/18/A/008 “Mašīnbūves kompetences centrs”.

Laika posmā no 01.04.2022 – 30.06.2022

MASOC Kompetences Centrā PERUZA SIA un WeAreDots SIA partnerībā ir realizējuši projektu “Tehnoloģija sabērtu sīkpaku atpazīšanai ar datorredzi un robotizētai šķirošanai.”

Haotiski sabērtu, nevienādu, reizēm attāli līdzīgu objektu, piemēram sīkpaku, automatizēta satveršana no paku kaudzes ir līdz šim praktiski neatrisināts uzdevums daudzās industrijās, pa ko liecina fakts, ka visā pasaulē šo uzdevumu joprojām veic cilvēki.
